Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday that his trip to Pattaya during the weekend is to assess the possibility of holding a Formula One (F1) race adjacent to Jomtien beach.

In his Facebook post today, he said that there are two types of F1 race, one is a city race and the other is a circuit race.

“In pursuing our F1 goal, the U-Tapao airport project includes a facility for a circuit race, which provides maximum safety.

Bangkok and Pattaya are being assessed for a city race, with captivating ‘City of Angels’ and scenic beachside race routes respectively,” his post reads.

After a field inspection in Pattaya, he said that, if the routes around Jomtien Beach were to be used for the race, it would be necessary for the route to be improved and there must be other facilities constructed, such as grandstands.

An F1 race is a large and difficult event to host, he admitted, adding that such an event would generate considerable tourism revenue for Thailand.
