A migrant worker from Myanmar was shot dead by a lone gunman as he was being treated at a hospital in Thailand’s north-eastern province of Khon Kaen on Thursday night.

Police suspect that the gunman is also from Myanmar.

The victim, Kyaw Swar Aong, had been admitted to a ward on the 5th floor of the hospital on Wednesday, to wait for surgery to remove a lump from his back.

The victim’s Thai girlfriend told the police that neither of them have any known enemies, adding, however, that the victim recently borrowed about 12,000 baht from a colleague and gave his ATM card as a guarantee.

Pol Col Yossawat Kaewsuebtanyanit, the police superintendent, said that a man, believed to be the gunman, arrived at the hospital at about 11pm last night and asked nurses where Kyaw Swar Aong was.

When he found him asleep in the ward, he fired one shot into the back of his head before fleeing.
