La Niña is set to affect Thailand from this month until January and this weather phenomenon will bring more rain than usual to the northern and north-eastern regions from until October, according to the weather forecast by the Meteorological Department.

The southern region will experience less rain in August, but will have more rain than usual in the other months.

The department’s chief, Kanrawee Sitthichawapak, said today that El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is currently looming over Thailand, will soon turn into La Niña.

She said that the ENSO phenomenon is normal, with the temperature of the Pacific Ocean in the tropical zone cooling down by an average of -0.9oC – 0.5oC over the past month.

Temperatures from July through October are forecast to be 0.2oC -1.0oC s higher than normal.

By comparison, there will be more rain through July and August than last year, but there will be less rainfall than last year from September to November.

Temperatures are forecast to be slightly higher during the third quarter than they were last year.
