The Election Commission (EC) has put in place a “Plan B”, in case the Constitutional Court rules that four articles in the senate election law are unconstitutional next Tuesday, Thitichet Nuchanatta, an election commissioner said today.

He reiterated that the provincial-level selections of senators will proceed this Sunday, but declined to elaborate on what the “Plan B” would entail, saying that the EC will wait for the ruling on Tuesday.

The commissioner described any conjecture, that the election of senators will be invalidated as a result of the court’s ruling, as pure speculation.

Meanwhile, EC Secretary General Sawaeng Boonmee said today that provincial election chiefs are ready for the voting on Tuesday, with an emphasis on ensuring a peaceful and orderly selection and the fairness of election officials.

He said all the flaws detected in the first round of selections, last Sunday, have are being addressed, such as the CCTV system at the polling units, which only recorded pictures without sound and some unqualified candidates being allowed to enter the polling area.

Regarding an observation that a number of candidates did not receive any votes in the district round of elections, which could indicate that they were proxies, Sawaeng said provincial election officials are still investigating the matter.
