The Election Commission (EC) is expected to announce the results of the final round of the senatorial elections on July 3 at the soonest, EC Secretary General Sawaeng Boonmee said today.

An unofficial list of the 200 prospective senators and 100 reservists has, however, been released by the EC.

Sawaeng said that election officials will check the list carefully, and this will take at least five days.

He said that anyone who came across any irregularities involving election officials or candidates can still file complaints directly with the EC or to the Supreme Court.

Officials are currently investigating complaints, such as claims of groups of candidates being booked into the same hotels, to find out if anybody “sponsored” their hotel accommodation, he said.

The EC secretary-general admitted that it is not legally clear whether candidates who are connected with political parties but are not actual party members constitute a violation of the senator election process, but he offered an assurance that the EC will apply the law to ensure that the process is fair to all.
