The Samut Sakhon provincial administration has decided to keep four cadmium slag warehouses closed to all outsiders for another 30 days, after high levels of heavy metals were detected in the ground both in and around the facilities.

Examination of soil samples, taken by officials of the 5thEnvironment and Pollution Control Office, shows high levels of cadmium, with approximately 12.1g/kg in front of the warehouses and 10.6g/kg in the warehouses, which are well above the 0.81g/kg safety limit.

Samut Sakhon Governor Phol Damtham reportedly said that the levels of heavy metal contamination in the ground still poses a threat to human health, so he decided to extend the closure for 30 days from June 28th.

About 8,400 tonnes of cadmium slag previously stored in the four warehouses, two owned by J & B Metal, one owned by Shin Hong Choeng Intertech and another in Krathum Baen district, have been returned to Tak province.

Inspectors from the Environment and Pollution Control Office checked the four locations today and will do so again tomorrow, to determine the contamination level and will report the findings to their office by July 8th.
